Pandemic News Articles

Point Roberts, a small community of approximately 850 residents, is completely dependent on essential and other services provided by businesses located in Mainland Washington State and British Columbia, Canada.
Since Canada’s introduction of the ArriveCan app in late 2021, business owners in both Washington State and British Columbia have refused to travel to Point Roberts to perform critical services, citing onerous border requirements to enter Canada.

January 28, 2022 – It’s been two-and-a-half months since the U.S. border reopened to Canadian visitors, but unfortunately in Point Roberts, it’s not bringing the levels of tourism that businesses there were expecting after the 19-month closure. Ali Hayton, owner of the International Marketplace — said that while business shot up for the first few weeks following the early November reopening, that died down as soon as the omicron surge started taking hold. >> READ THE ARTICLE

January 28, 2022 – The Whatcom County exclave has been cut off from the mainland and marooned since the pandemic forced the U.S. and Canada to halt cross-border traffic.
